The individual and structural biases that affect the American healthcare system have serious emotional and physical consequences that all too often go unseen. These biases are often rooted in power, class, racial, gender or sexual orientation prejudices, and as a result, the injured parties usually lack the resources needed to protect themselves. In Healthcare and Human Dignity, individual worth, equality, and autonomy emerge as the dominant values at stake in encounters with doctors, nurses, hospitals, and drug companies. Although the public is aware of legal battles over autonomy and dignity in the context of death, the everyday patient’s need for dignity has received scant attention. Thus, in Healthcare, law professor Frank McClellan’s collection of cases and individual experiences bring these stories to life and establish beyond doubt that human dignity is of utmost priority in the everyday process of healthcare decision making.

On average, black Americans are sicker and die earlier than white Americans. Uncertain Suffering provides a richly nuanced examination of what this fact means for health care in the United States through the lens of sickle cell anemia, a disease that primarily affects blacks. In a wide ranging analysis that moves from individual patient cases to the compassionate yet distanced professionalism of health care specialists to the level of national policy, Carolyn Moxley Rouse uncovers the cultural assumptions that shape the quality and delivery of care for sickle cell patients. She reveals a clinical world fraught with uncertainties over how to treat black patients given resource limitations and ambivalence. Her book is a compelling look at the ways in which the politics of racism, attitudes toward pain and suffering, and the reliance on charity for healthcare services for the underclass can create disparities in the U.S. Instead of burdening hospitals and clinics with the task of ameliorating these disparities, Rouse argues that resources should be redirected to community-based health programs that reduce daily forms of physical and mental suffering.

Het is bekend dat medische cannabis een belangrijke bijdrage kan leveren in de gezondheidssector. In tegenstelling tot wat men vaak denkt is cannabis een technisch complex onderwerp en spelen er vele facetten mee bij haar inzetbaarheid, daarom is ook dit boek tot stand gekomen.We hebben in dit boek gezorgd dat de wetenschappelijke, biologische en farmacologische onderbouw correct, objectief en begrijpbaar is. De geneeskundige indicaties, bij gebrek aan gecontroleerde studies zijn bescheiden gehouden. Tenslotte zijn er ook de sociale, psychologische en vooral de medico-legale aspecten die voor artsen en paramedici van grote waarde zijn. We zijn dan ook zeer nauwkeurig te werk gegaan om alles met referenties en en bronvermeldingen te onderbouwen.Tegelijk is het geschreven in klare en objectieve taal die voor iedereen te begrijpen is. Ook patiënten die meer informatie wensen over de voor- en nadelen van medicinale cannabis en de juridische aspecten, vinden in dit boek zeker de nodige antwoorden.Voor de samenstelling van het boek konden wij buiten onze eigen expertise als apotheker en ervaringsdeskundige in patiëntenorganisatie MEDCAN vzw, rekenen op de bijdrage van:· Pauwels advocaten, gespecialiseerd in verkeerswetgeving (m.b.t. cannabis in het verkeer en de speekseltest);· Transvaal apotheek die gespecialiseerd is in magistrale bereidingen en in Nederland pionier is in de ontwikkeling van medicinale cannabis olie;· Bedrocan International, de producent van medicinale cannabis in Nederland;· 15 patiënten die hun verhaal vertellen (vaak met volledige naam) en uitleggen wat de voordelen zijn van het gebruik van medicinale cannabis bij hun aandoening.Met dit boek willen de auteurs een bron van objectieve informatie aanbieden voor artsen, verzorgers en patiënten.
